English: Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas.

French: Joyeuses Fêtes. Joyeux Noël.

It's that time of year, and your pilots and in-charge flight attendants will often make announcements wishing passengers a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. If they do, we should be able to translate it into French as well.

Joyeux, Joyeuse=Happy, Merry, Joyous

Fêtes (f,pl)=Holidays

Noël (m)=Christmas

Joyeuses Fêtes=Happy Holidays

Joyeux Noël=Merry Christmas

As a side note, "fête" can also mean "party" in French. In Canadian French, "fête" also means "birthday" and you can wish someone a "happy birthday" by saying "bonne fête". (Bon, Bonne=Good)

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. The main square in the old town (Medina) of Marrakesh is called Jemaa el Fna and it is always bustling with activity. Snake charmers. Monkeys. Henna. Food and drink stalls. Restaurants. Rooftop patios. Endless souvenir shops with all kinds of things to buy. Be wary though. Of all the Medinas I visited this trip, I must say the one here had the most aggressive shopkeepers, doing whatever they can to get you to eat at their place or buy at their shop.

English: Thank you for your patience

French: Merci pour votre patience

For any kind of delay or any situation where the passengers are made to wait, like waiting for the entertainment system to reboot, it’s always nice to thank them for their patience. This is a phrase you will, and should use very often. It acknowledges that their time is important and it’s useful to add on to the end of any announcement about a delay or inconvenience.

Merci=Thank you

Pour=For

Votre=Your

Patience (f)=Patience.

Merci pour votre patience.

You’ll also hear ‘’Merci de votre patience’’. There is a slight difference in usage between “Merci de…” and “Merci pour…” However, the difference is negligible. Our Canadian French for Flight Attendants audio course opts for “Merci pour…” as it’s more analogous to “Thank you for…” in English.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. I must say the Marrakesh airport is really quite an impressive piece of architecture. It was 30 Dirham (just over $4 Canadian) to take the bus directly from the airport to the old town. I’m cheap though, and opted to walk 5 minutes from the airport to the main road, where the local bus to the old town only costs 4 Dirham. Frankly, I would’ve walked the whole way, as I love exploring new cities like that, had it not been raining. Waiting for the bus, a nice double rainbow appeared.

English: Restart the entertainment system

French: Redémarrer le système de divertissement

As mentioned last post, your plane may have an inflight entertainment system playing movies and shows on the individual screens of each seat back. If it runs into technical issues during your flight, there’s probably not much you can do except for restarting it to see if that fixes the issue. You’d want to make an announcement to your passengers to advise them that you’re restarting the system.

If you’re having an issue with an individual screen, you might need to try to restart that particular screen.

Redémarrer=To restart

Système (m)=System

Divertissement (m)=Entertainment, Distraction, Diversion

Système de divertissement=Entertainment system

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. I’m back from Morocco! Here are some pictures to share for you, in more or less chronological order. Transferring at Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), I flew to Marrakesh’s Menara Airport (RAK). The view from the skies is always nice.
