English: To restart

French: Redémarrer

Often, mechanical issues occur when the airplane’s computer system gives fault indications. One way that maintenance may ask the pilots to address the issue is to do a system restart. Restarting the computer system or a certain component of the computer system may fix the fault indication. Your pilots may announce that they’re doing a system restart of some sort and you may need to translate that into French.

Démarrer=To start, to start up (in the sense of setting something in motion or switching something on)

Redémarrer=To restart

If your airplane also has onboard WiFi or an inflight entertainment system and you run into technical problems with them in flight, you may need to perform a restart of these systems as well to try to fix them.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Tofino, British Columbia. June 2014. Tofino, Colombie-Britannique. Juin 2014. This was on a trip I took to Tofino, which is a town on the Pacific coast of Vancouver Island, known worldwide for its surfing. I stayed across the water from Tofino, on a smaller island with a mountain. A group of us hiked up the mountain and enjoyed the view from atop. I did take a surfing lesson afterwards but it sure was hard. I was eventually able to stand on the surfboard…for a couple of seconds, before falling down again.

English: Connecting passengers

French: Passagers en correspondance

Sometimes, you’ve boarded most of your passengers but you’re still waiting for delayed connecting passengers. Procedures vary of course, but generally, operation managers (and not the pilots, nor the agents inside the airport) will make the decision to hold the flight for connecting passengers or not. If your flight is holding for connecting passengers, you may need to make an announcement advising your passengers and translating that announcement into French.

Passagers en correspondance=Connecting passengers

Passager=Passenger (m)

Passagère=Passenger (f)

En=In

Correspondance (f)=Correspondence, connection (transport)

In Canada, you’ll often hear your passengers use the word “connexion (f)” to mean “connection” (transport). Nevertheless, the formal word for “connection” in French, in the context of train or flight connections, is ‘’correspondance’’.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Okinawa, Japan. February 2015. Okinawa, Japon. Février 2015. Wrapping up my trip to Japan, I flew back to Tokyo on one of Japan’s airlines, ANA (All Nippon Airways). In the back of their inflight magazine (as with most airlines’ inflight magazines), you can see the specifications of all the aircraft in their fleet. At the bottom of the page, it was nice to see that they had the Millennium Falcon in their fleet. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to fly the Millennium Falcon between Okinawa and Tokyo.
