English: Do you need a bag?

French: Avez-vous besoin d’un sac?


You might ask the passenger if they need a bag to put their duty-free purchases in.


In English, we would say “Do you need (something)?” In French, we literally say “Do you have need of (something)?” "Do you need..." is a phrase that you’ll encounter and use often, not only in this context but in other contexts as well.


Vous avez=you have

Avez-vous?=do you have?

Besoin (m)=need (noun)

Avez-vous besoin de…?=Do you need…?

Un sac (m)=a bag


“Avez-vous besoin d’un sac?"


You can also ask "Voulez-vous un sac?" "Do you want a bag?"


Vous voulez=you want

Voulez-vous?=do you want?

French: Votre signature ici SVP.


Duty-free purchases may require the passenger to sign the receipt. You can hand them the receipt and a pen, saying "votre signature ici SVP."


Votre signature (f)=your signature

Ici=here


Remember the word for "receipt" is "reçu (m)". As you hand them their copy of the receipt, you can say "votre reçu, merci."

English: Do you have a piece of identification?

French: Avez-vous une pièce d’identité?


Some duty-free purchases may require you to ask for and verify the passenger’s ID with their credit card.


Pièce (f)=piece

Identité (f)=identity


You can specify "photo ID". "Avez-vous une pièce d'identité avec photo?"


Avec photo (f)=with photo


Here are a couple of common pieces of ID you will see on an airplane:


Permis de conduire=driver's licence, driver's permit

Permis (m)=licence, permit

Conduire=to drive

Passeport (m)=passport
