If you’re checking a cabin bag to the baggage hall of the passenger’s final destination, you should tell them that they’ll retrieve their bag there, with the other checked bags (and not beside the airplane at the gate upon arrival.)

Salle (f)=Room, hall

À=At, to, in (in this context, its meaning is closer to “for”)

Bagages (m,pl)=Baggage

Note that "bagages" in French is usually used in the plural.

In our Canadian French for Flight Attendants audio course, we tell passengers that they can get their bags at the “carousel”, meaning the baggage carousel in the baggage hall. It’s a bit easier for learners as the French word for carousel is very similar: carrousel (m).

If you’re checking a bag at the gate because it doesn’t fit or if there’s no more space, your airline might have the agents check the bag to the baggage hall of the passenger’s final destination. The passenger may be making connections once your flight arrives, so to ensure that the bag is properly tagged to the passenger’s final destination, you should ask the passenger what the final destination is.

Destination (f)=Destination

Final/finale=Final

In English, we say “What’s your final destination.” In French, we literally say “Which is your final destination.”

If there’s no more space in the bins, or if a passenger’s suitcase is packed too big to fit anywhere inside the cabin, you’ll probably have to check the bag and send it to the cargo. The English word “check” has many different meanings, but in the context of airplanes and “checking a bag”, it is translated into French as “enregistrer”.

Valise (f)=Suitcase

Enregistrer=To check (in the context of checking bags)

By extension, “checked baggage” is “bagages enregistrés”.

Enregistré=Checked

Bagages (m, pl)=Baggage

Sac (m)=Bag, sack

Sac enregistré. Valise enregistrée.

“Enregistrer” is the formal translation that airlines use for “check”, but it’s not the easiest word to pronounce for French learners. Even your French Canadian passengers will often use the anglicism “checker” or “tchecker”. (The spelling can be ambiguous as this word is usually only spoken in informal Canadian French, and is not often written.) In our Canadian French for Flight Attendants audio course, we’ll use an alternative word for “check”, one that’s easier to pronounce for learners, but still formal.
