French: C’est important de garder la sortie dégagée.


Bags that are left on the floor, blocking emergency exits, or protruding out from under the seat, can impede evacuation. That’s why for take off and landing, it’s important to keep each person’s exit path out of their own seat clear, as well as the space in front of the emergency exits clear.


Sometimes, you’ll need to explain this to passengers, especially to those who don't travel often. Why their bag needs to go fully under the seat so it doesn’t protrude. Why they can't keep bags between or behind their legs during take off or landing. Why they can’t have too many bags under their seat, in a way that some bags are protruding. Why they can’t leave bags on the floor blocking the emergency exit during take off and landing. It’s important to keep the exit clear.

Garder=To keep

La sortie (f)=The exit

Dégagée=Clear


Notice that ‘’c’est important’’ is followed by ‘’de’’. C’est important [de] garder la sortie dégagée.

French: Sous le siège, devant les jambes.


Bags should be stowed fully under the seat in front of the passenger for take off and landing. However, you'll see that some passengers will inevitably leave bags between their legs or behind their legs for take off and landing. As you do your safety checks before take off or landing, you can remind these passengers to stow bags under the seat in front of them, emphasizing that the bag needs to go in front of their legs.


Devant=In front of

Les jambes (f, pl)=the legs


Pouvez-vous ranger votre sac sous le siège, devant les jambes, SVP?


Notice in English, we would say "in front of [your] legs", but in French, we say "devant [les] jambes", literally "in front of [the] legs.

French: Pouvez-vous ranger votre sac sous le siège devant vous, SVP?


As you’re preparing the cabin for departure or for landing, you may see someone still holding onto a bag on their lap. These bags need to be stowed for take off and landing. You can suggest they put the bag under the seat in front of them, if there’s space.


Vous pouvez=You can.

Pouvez-vous?=Can you?

Pouvez-vous ranger?=Can you stow?

Votre sac (m)=Your bag

Sous=Under

Le siège (m)=The seat

Devant vous=In front of you


Pouvez-vous ranger votre sac sous le siège devant vous, SVP?
