The seat belt sign is still on after landing because you haven’t arrived at the gate yet and you need to make an announcement. Or during flight, you’re going through turbulence and you need to remind passengers that the seat belt sign is still on.

La consigne (des ceintures)=The sign (of the belts)

Est=Is

Toujours=Always, Still

Allumé(e)=Illuminated, On

Remember that in French, in the context of an airplane, we can just say “la consigne” to mean “the seat belt sign.”

"La consigne (des ceintures) est allumée."

In French, there’s no easy way to say that something is “on” or “off”. The seat belt sign is a light that illuminates above each passenger on the airplane, so we literally say that the sign or light is illuminated: “allumé(e)”.

You can also say that the sign is “still” on. In French, we say “toujours”, which is also the word that means “always”.

Toujours allumé(e)=Always illuminated, Still illuminated

You’ve made the announcement requesting that passengers stay seated and keep their seat belts fastened. At this point, it’s also common to remind passengers that the seat belt sign is still illuminated and that they should wait for it to be turned off before getting up to retrieve their bags.

There are a few ways to say “seat belt sign” in French and you’ll also hear your francophone colleagues say a few different things in French. One way is “consigne des ceintures”.

La consigne (f)=The sign

Des ceintures (f, pl)=Of the (seat) belts

The word “consigne” means “sign” in this specific context and in this context, it's okay to just say "consigne" to mean "seat belt sign". European francophones will generally not use "consigne" like this.

In more general contexts, "consigne" can also mean “instruction”. Larger airports also have baggage storage facilities and you may see that these facilities are also called “consignes” in French.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. Part 1: Chefchaouen, the blue city, is located a bit inland from the Mediterranean sea. Many of its buildings are painted a beautiful sky blue colour. There’s no consensus on why the buildings were originally painted blue. Some say it was to ward off mosquitoes. Others say they were painted blue to represent the sky and the heavens. Some locals say that it was done simply to attract tourists. As I was walking through the beautiful alleyways, I felt a few drops of rain. When I looked at my shirt and backpack, I noticed that the droplets were not like raindrops. I looked up and saw that a painter was applying another layer of blue paint to the top of a building. I guess I took home a piece of the blue city with me.

Please keep your seat belt attached.

You’ve landed but you’re still waiting for the ramp agents to arrive and guide your plane to the gate. After requesting that passengers remain seated, it’s also common to request that they keep their seat belts attached for the time being, until the plane parks and the captain switches off the seat belt sign.

Garder=To keep

Votre ceinture (f)=Your (seat) belt

Attaché(e)=Attached.

(SVP) veuillez garder votre ceinture attachée.

It was early in the morning when we left Fes and the shops along the road were just opening up, selling gourds and tagine pots and other trinkets.
