English: Closet

French: Vestiaire

Some airplanes may have closets to hang passenger jackets and stow passenger bags. Often, closet space is quite limited on an airplane and it may just be reserved for business class passengers’ belongings. As they board, passengers sometimes ask you if you have closet space for their belongings. Besides luggage, some may bring on garment bags, wedding dresses, or musical instruments. If you can accommodate (provided your plane has a closet), you can stow these items in your closet. One word for “closet” in French is “vestiaire”.

Vestiaire (m)=Closet

Dans le vestiaire=In the closet

Avez-vous de la place?=Do you have some space?

Incidentally, a change room in a gym or pool is also called a “vestiaire”.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. Arriving in Fes, this was the Riad (guest house) where I stayed, right in the old city of Fes. I had the rooftop room, with a panoramic view of the city, including the Marinid Tombs on top of the hill north of the old city.

English: Stroller, wheelchair

French: Pousette, chaise roulante

Besides baggage, passengers will also bring strollers and perhaps their own wheelchairs. Generally, strollers and wheelchairs are left at the door of the plane then sent into the cargo for the flight, and they’re brought back up beside the plane upon arrival. As a passenger boards, they sometimes will confirm with you where they should leave the stroller or wheelchair. Upon arrival, they sometimes will ask you where they should wait for their stroller or wheelchair.

Pousette (f)=Stroller

Chaise (f)=Chair

Roulant(e)=Rolling

Chaise roulante=Wheelchair

“Pousette” derives from the verb “pousser”, meaning “to push”.

Instead of “chaise roulante”, you will also hear “fauteuil roulant”. “Fauteuil” (m), is another word for “chair”. In our Canadian French for Flight Attendants audio course, we opt for “chaise roulante” as it’s an easier word for most learners to pronounce. The word “chaise” is also used in English, borrowed directly from French, often in the expression "chaise longue", literally "long chair" (often deformed in North American English to "chaise lounge").

COVID-19. As many of you are aware, the COVID-19 pandemic is having a drastic toll on many industries around the world, especially the travel and airline industries.

Our thoughts are with our flight attendant and airline colleagues during this difficult time. Please take the appropriate measures to protect yourselves and self-isolate as necessary. Let's do our best to help contain this virus so that our communities and the travel industry can recover as soon as possible.

In closing, I leave you with this article about "caremongering"-helping each other during this pandemic.

Day three of the tour was a full day of driving from the desert to the city of Fes. Along the way, we saw locals riding while hanging on the outside of a car, and a bit of snow in the Atlas Mountains, drawing lots of people with skis, snowboards, and toboggans.

English: Under the seat in front of you.

French: Sous le siège devant vous.

Even if the bag doesn’t fit in the overhead bin, or there’s no more space in the overhead bin for a passenger’s bag, the passenger may still be reluctant to check the bag into the cargo. They may have important or fragile items in their bag. When possible, you can suggest that the passenger simply stow the bag under their seat.

Sous=Under

Le siège (m)=The seat

Devant=In front of

Vous=You

The word “sous” means “under”. As a side note, it is also the plural of the French word “sou” (m), which is a word meaning “cent” or “penny”. The word “sou” is used by French Canadians but not so much nowadays by European francophones. As a flight attendant, you’ll need to process payments for food, drinks, and duty-free purchases and thus you’ll need to be able to express prices in French. Our Canadian French for Flight Attendants audio course covers this in Module 3.

Flight Attendant Souvenirs. Souvenirs d’un agent de bord. Morocco, December 2019. Maroc, décembre 2019. From Marrakesh to Fes, I went on a three-day tour through the Morrocan desert. For our second night, we rode camels into the desert and camped in the desert for the night. I did spend a bit more for the “luxury camping” experience. The campsite was beautiful and the tents were really decked out. That night, we had dinner and sang and danced around the campfire.
